What is Alice on Sunday about?

I have spent many years teaching writing and writing, and many decades as a reader. When I walk into a bookstore my heart beats harder and I get gooseflesh. I love books, writing, writers and readers, and lots of other art as well. This substack is about that love.

What have you published?

I have written four books of fiction, the short story collections Naked to the Waist (1991) and In the Gloaming (1998), and two novels, Think of England (2000) and Fellowship Point (2022.) My writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s, Poughshares, A Public Space, and more. My short story “In the Gloaming,” appeared in Best American Stories of the Century and was made into two films, including one by HBO that’s available on Amazon Prime.
